House Kitchen and Bar

555 Capitol Mall, Suite 155, Sacramento

(916) 498-9924

www.houseoncapitol.com

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday

Happy hour: 4-8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday

The real steal: Select from $5 well drinks, house wines, appetizers and specialty cocktails, as well as $2 and $3 draft beers. Appetizers range from the popular pulled-pork sliders and sweet and spicy chicken pieces to the more classic lettuce wraps to specialty snacks such as sweet-corn tamale cakes.

The vibe: This upscale lounge-restaurant is well-lit by floor-to-ceiling windows and has plenty of booths and tables.

Happy hour happens at the bar and patio, with the patio a favored spot in summer. It is perfect for watching people and cars whiz by. There are plenty of umbrellas to keep you sheltered from the sun.

Signature drink: The happy-hour menu offers five different $5 specialty cocktails; the two favorites are the "ripened raspberry ice pick" and "tryst on the beach."

The ripened raspberry ice pick is made with a sweet tea vodka, raspberry vodka, raspberry liqueur and sweetened lemon juice for a strong but still sweet drink.

The tryst on the beach is a fruity, tropical drink made with vanilla- flavored vodka, peach schnapps, melon liqueur and cranberry and pineapple juices.

Bathroom break: The bathrooms are outside the restaurant, in the main lobby of the larger building that houses House.

Something extra: An intriguing sight during happy hour is the hard-to-miss giant whisk hanging from House's ceiling. The whisk was designed to represent what the restaurant stands for – a modern twist on comfort food, made from fresh ingredients. In the center of the whisk is the House logo.

Local artist (and bartender at Sacramento's Dive Bar) Matthew Byrd designed the whisk, and the Guinness Book of World Records even came out recently to take photographs and name it the world's largest whisk.
