Fall is the best time to plant many California native perennials. Find them at this huge sale hosted by the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the California Native Plant Society. Get free advice on choosing the best natives for your backyard habitat and how to make them thrive. Can't make this sale? A second sale will be held next Saturday at Soil Born Farms' American River Ranch, 2140 Chase Drive, Rancho Cordova.


• MASTER GARDENER WORKSHOP: HERBS, WORMS AND MORE

Where: Fair Oaks Horticulture Center, 11549 Fair Oaks Blvd., Fair Oaks

Sacramento County's UC master gardeners will be out in force to answer questions during this free workshop day. Among the topics to be covered: Proper pruning of herbs, worm composting, drip irrigation and river-friendly gardening. Have a garden pest or mystery plant? Bring a sample in a sealed plastic bag for expert opinions.


• PLANT SALE PREVIEW

Where: Arboretum Teaching Nursery, Garrod Drive, UC Davis

• EAST SACRAMENTO HOME REMODELING TOUR

Where: Start at 1355 38th St., Sacramento

Admission: $20 advance (see website below); $25 day of tour

Hosted by the Friends of East Sacramento, this tour focuses on five homes and one garden – all either extensively remodeled or brand new. Proceeds benefit renovations to the Clunie Center in McKinley Park.
