Granite Bay (Division I), Vacaville (D-II) and Del Oro (D-III) won their respective Sac-Joaquin Section football championships last season.

But in losing heartbreakers Friday night, the three teams are a combined 3-9, with more tough tests still ahead.

Granite Bay fell 28-27 to visiting Pittsburg in overtime when the Pirates made a two-point conversion after Jamal Lockett's three-yard touchdown run. Lockett also ran in the conversion.

The Grizzlies had taken a 27-20 lead in overtime on Grant Caraway's two-yard touchdown pass to Clint Ellinwood and Colin Brown's point-after kick.

Granite Bay led 20-6 entering the fourth quarter.

In a battle between No. 16 Del Oro and No. 17 Grant in Del Paso Heights in which the lead changed hands five times, the Golden Eagles appeared to have the victory wrapped up when Dylan Kainrath scored on a one-yard run with 41 seconds left.

Kainrath, who rushed for three touchdowns filling in for injured star Brandon Monroe, set up his last scoring run with a 60-yard burst.

But Isaiah Rios' 46-yard pass to Darrion Jeffery paved the way for Jorge Vega's game-winning 32-yard field goal with one second to play.

In front of a Vacaville homecoming crowd, No. 6 Oak Ridge prevailed over the Bulldogs 24-21 after Vacaville missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt with five seconds to play.

Oak Ridge took the lead with a minute to play when Jason Samuels hit Byron Spain with an 11-yard touchdown pass, capping a 95-yard drive.

Samuels then connected with Justin Priest on a two-point conversion pass to send Trojans coach Eric Cavaliere home a winner against his alma mater.

Friday, Del Oro (0-4) hosts state-ranked James Logan (5-0) of Union City, Granite Bay (1-3) hosts preseason section No. 1 Lincoln of Stockton (2-2), and Vacaville (2-2) travels to Deer Valley (3-1) of Antioch.

Slow start, strong finish – Despite getting off to a horrendous beginning in Auburn on Friday, No. 20 Yuba City (4-1) gave No. 7 Placer (4-0) everything it could handle before falling 42-33.

After trailing 21-0 in the first quarter, the Honkers closed to 28-27 late in the third quarter and 35-33 midway through the fourth quarter, missing game-tying conversions both times.

Honkers quarterback Taylor Elkins had the Hillmen on their heels at times, throwing for 323 yards and three touchdowns.

But he also was picked off four times, with the last interception by Jalen Lewis setting up Peter Denham's clinching 22-yard touchdown pass to Todd Valliere with about a minute to play.

Placer plays at Woodcreek on Friday, while Yuba City has a bye before beginning Tri-County Conference play.

Lions win – Kijafa Burgie's 58-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Aldo Alejandrez's extra-point kick lifted McClatchy over Valley 7-6 Friday in a Metro Conference opener at Hughes Stadium.

The Lions' score came shortly after Chas Roberts had scored for Valley on a three-yard run.

But the Vikings' conversion run failed.

Pointed decision – Vista del Lago put up 72 first-half points, including 44 in the first quarter, en route to a 79-14 victory over El Dorado in Placerville.

But that isn't even a Folsom-area best.

Folsom High scored 75 first-half points in beating Vacaville 75-6 in a 2010 playoff game in a driving rain in Folsom.
