MATCHUP TO WATCH
49ers inside linebacker Patrick Willis vs. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson
Peterson always has had a special place in his heart for Willis and the 49ers after they shut him down and Willis knocked him down when the two were rookies in 2007. Peterson is feeling stronger after tearing an ACL last season, and he's itching to test himself against the 49ers' vaunted run defense. The Vikings are the first run-oriented team the 49ers play this season.
THREE KEYS TO GAME
The 49ers' linebackers will keep an eye on quarterback Christian Ponder, one of the more athletic quarterbacks in the league. Ponder can run 40 yards in 4.6 seconds, and the 49ers are wary of him turning broken plays into big gains.
Like Green Bay's Randall Cobb, the Vikings will line up wide receiver Percy Harvin all over the field. Harvin has 18 catches in the first two games, the best start for a Vikings receiver since Randy Moss had 17 in the first two weeks in 2002.
One area in which the 49ers haven't excelled protecting the quarterback. Alex Smith has been sacked seven times in two games, and this week the offensive line is facing Jared Allen, who led the league with 22 sacks last season.
