Re "Overnight camping ban to be enforced" (Marcos Breton, Sept. 19): Marcus Breton incorrectly states that illegal camping laws were not being enforced in the American River Parkway. The county has restored the illegal camping detail. The illegal camping detail, in cooperation with city police officers, has been enforcing illegal camping laws in the lower parkway.
County park Rangers are being asked to perform their duties with insufficient resources. Save the American River Association (SARA) led the successful effort earlier this year that persuaded the county Board of Supervisors to add two rangers, which has enabled a second illegal camping detail. There aren't enough rangers. The county parks director has publicly said that 25 are needed. Currently 16 are authorized.
While The Bee has focused attention on the impact of illegal camping on the parkway, past efforts of the county park rangers, Parks Department staff, city police officers and parkway stakeholder groups should not be ignored.
