A Rancho Cordova man was arrested Thursday night after fleeing a collision in east Sacramento that sent his sport-utility vehicle plowing into a storefront, police said.

Sacramento police officials said the unidentified 19-year-old was eastbound on J Street about 6:45 p.m. between 48th and 49th streets when the SUV he was driving collided with another car, then into the front of Knotts Pharmacy.

The man ran from the wreckage, said police and witnesses, but was captured by officers about 7 p.m. at 59th Street and Folsom Boulevard.

Police believe the teen may have stolen the SUV and was possibly involved in a hit-and-run incident earlier in the day, said Sgt. Jeff Morris.

While police investigated, Steve Dokimos, the pharmacy's owner for the past 12 years, surveyed the damage and vowed to open the doors as usual at 9 a.m. today

Knotts has served residents in the east Sacramento neighborhood for decades, and Dokimos said he had already heard from well-wishers Thursday night.

"We'll open (today)," he said outside the pharmacy. "It means the world to me, the community's support. It's hard to put into words."
