Republican Rep. Dan Lungren and Democratic opponent Ami Bera are engaged in one of the most contested congressional seats in the country. They squared off together for the first time last week in a debate sponsored by The Bee, Capital Public Radio and News10. Stuart Leavenworth and Dan Morain tweeted live from the debate. Here are excerpts from their tweets.

At News10 for Lungren-Bera debate, Lungren arrived a few minutes ago with brother Brian and Assembly candidate Peter Tateishi, Lungren's ex CoS. – Dan Morain

Bera offers handshake to Lungren, and now it is show time! – Stuart Leavenworth

Bera a bit nervous at start, says he is product and American dream. Says Congress has failed us. – Leavenworth

Dr. Bera's opening statement focuses on American Dream, works in free clinic, finds patients are middle class. Congress hasn't provided jobs. – Morain

Rep. Lungren focuses on 9-11 and threats to American way. – Morain

Bera calls for infrastructure jobs, levees, big issue in Sac. Lungren responds that Congress can't create jobs. – Leavenworth

Lungren claims $700 billion in GOP plan would stay in Medicare. Bera says Lungren would privatize Medicare. Lungren disagrees. – Leavenworth

Bera denies Dems want to cut Medicare, points to Lungren and says "you know that's not true." Lungren stares at podium and grins. – Morain

Lungren distances himself from Romney victims quote. Both he and Bera call for more jobs, but in different ways.

Global warming? Lungren believes climate change happening but doesn't know if humans cause it. He worries about impact on coal industry. – Morain

Bera: We can become an energy independent country. We must address this. – Leavenworth

Lungren defends wanting to replace Obamacare. Bera agrees health reform doesn't control costs. Says we need to take on insurance cos. – Leavenworth

Bera says we have to get back to bipartisanship. Not sure when DC was bipartisan. – Morain

Did you vote for Dem budgets, John Myers asked Lungren. "I voted for the alternatives, yes." I think that's a no but am not sure. – Morain

Lungren calls corn ethanol subsidies immoral. Bera says govt wastes money on insurance and pharmaceuticals.

Lungren says Obama has been weak on Iran. Bera stands with Lungren. Israel is one of closest allies, he said.

Bera hits Lungren for taking state pension, and spiking it on way out. Lungren says that is false. – Leavenworth

Lungren hits Bera for past promise to run a clean campaign. Bera says this is about setting a personal example.

Bera hits Lungren on supporting wars, tax cuts and oil companies, then goes too far in comparing Lungren to a burglar. – Leavenworth

Lungren hits Bera for supporting high speed rail in past, not now. – Leavenworth

Too bad there were no questions on Sacramento levees. Lungren has yet to deliver, but gets away with it.

Lungren says Bera for status quo on steroids.
