MATCHUP TO WATCH
49ers safety Donte Whitner vs. Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes
Holmes has become Mark Sanchez's favorite target, and every member of the 49ers' secondary including Holmes' former Ohio State teammate, Whitner must keep an eye on him. Like Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin last week, Holmes is excellent after the catch, and Sanchez will look for him deep, shallow and everywhere in between. Holmes leads the Jets in receptions (16) and yards (243).
THREE KEYS TO GAME
San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith has two new deep threats in Randy Moss and Mario Manningham yet rarely throws long. The Jets will be without their top player, cornerback Darrelle Revis, and Smith must test replacement Kyle Wilson, especially when New York blitzes.
The 49ers' defense must get off the field after third downs. Last week, it allowed the Vikings to go on several long drives including one that went 16 plays and Minnesota went 7 of 14 on third-down conversions.
Tim Tebow has yet to attempt a pass when substituting for Sanchez, but he could at any time. The 49ers' defense must aggressively stop Tebow's power rushing while being mindful of his receivers.
