Re "Sacramento needs to grow political spine" (Marcos Breton, Sept. 30): Full praise to Marcos Breton for his ringing challenge to Sacramento political leaders. How sad that it took Phil Serna's injury to cast the lawless ruination of the American River Parkway in its true light.
Before Folsom Dam, the American in summer ran a shallow, braided course through myriad sand bars. My dad and I would wade the cool riffles and pools taking scrappy smallmouth black bass on fly-fishing tackle. Our only riverside encounters were with the abundant wildlife: an erupting covey of California quail, a flushed pheasant exploding into flight with a raucous cackle, or meeting a small riverine mammal, like the coal-black fisher marten resting on a low branch that I once confronted eye-to-eye while edging through a cottonwood-berry vine bramble.
The American might again be that wonder-filled portal to the natural world. We the people must take it back.
