Re "Prop. 37 is a sour plan for food labeling" (Editorials, Sept. 16) Much of what we eat today has been genetically modified. Plant breeding is genetic modification accomplished for centuries through different techniques in the fields and greenhouses. "GMO" crops have been grown commercially for 20 years, validated as safe, and resulted in more food production for a growing planet.
Proposition 37 is being pushed by the "organic" industry to market premium-priced "organic" foods by driving up the cost of food produced conventionally. If passed, this labeling requirement would increase prices of most food through expensive labeling requirements.
A non-legislative approach would ask those "organic" marketers to promote and label their products as "GMO-free." For consumers who feel compelled to pay more for their food, this labeling would make it easy to determine the products to purchase and would encourage the "organic" industry to promote and sell the value of their offering.
