AAA said the average statewide price of unleaded regular gasoline opened today by hitting yet another all-time high of 4.668 a gallon, but experts said relief may be on the way.
Today's AAA figures were slightly above Sunday's statewide average of $4.655 a gallon. Premium gas was going for an average $4.86 throughout California.
National gas price tracker GasBuddy.com put the average price of a gallon of gas in California at $4.66, virtually unchanged from Sunday, and it rated the current price trend as stable.
GasBuddy analysts and others blamed last week's California-specific spike in prices on a perfect storm of refinery production disruptions up and down the state.
Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said today that the tide might be turning.
"The good news for Californians is to expect relief this week," said DeHaan, noting that California wholesale gas prices turned down at the end of last week.
GasBuddy said the average retail price of gas in Sacramento skyrocketed 45.8 cents to $4.53 a gallon over the past week. That's up 81 cents from one year ago and 44.7 cents from last month.
Nationally, the average price was $3.80 a gallon, virtually unchanged from last week.
