SPOOKY STORIES

Tour has tantalizing tales of haunted train

Get your ghost on and prepare to channel a good, spooky time at the adults-only Historical Haunted Tour in Truckee, 5 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Expect storytelling, costumed characters in mini-skits, local lore, dinner specials, a raffle and more. For the first time, the annual tour will delve into the Wells Fargo's Haunted Express Train Car No. 5.

"The tantalizing details of the town's history will come alive before your eyes, with surprises on every corner," said show producer Christina Young. "Unforeseen treats and startling spooks will be everywhere."

Eleven nightly tours will depart at 15-minute intervals from Moody's Bistro, 10007 Bridge St. Tickets are $35 per person and are limited. To buy tickets and for more information: (775) 527-4485, www.truckeehistorytour.com.

GHOST WALK

Wild, haunted West

Scary fun is on the schedule a couple hours' drive away. Check out the 20-year-old Ghost Walk in Carson City, Nev., on Saturday; and the Carson Valley Haunted Weekend, a variety of activities including cemetery tours and paranormal investigations in the neighboring towns of Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa, Thursday through next Sunday.

"It's like walking into the past," said organizer Mary Bennett. "You will leave with a much broader understanding of the wild, wild West."

The Carson City Ghost Walk offers 90-minute guided tours of five historical (and perhaps haunted) houses, including the Bliss Mansion, a 15-room Victorian, and the Ferris Mansion, former home of George Ferris Jr., inventor of the Ferris wheel. This year's theme is Legends of the Past, and one of them — Mark Twain – will greet participants along the route.

Tours will depart from Firkin & Fox restaurant, 310 S. Carson St., every half-hour from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. For details and to buy tickets: (775) 348-6279, www.carsoncityghostwalk.com.

For more shivers, drive a few miles south for the Carson Valley Haunted Weekend. Among the events will be ghost investigations and a ghost-hunting workshop led by the Northern Nevada Ghost Hunters.

A "real ghost investigation" will start at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the New Rancho Grande hotel in Gardnerville; another will go from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the historical Courthouse Museum in Genoa. The ghost-hunting workshop will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at the Courthouse Museum in Genoa.

Other Haunted Weekend events include the Haunted Minden Ghost Walk at 6 p.m. Thursday; the Haunted Genoa Cemetery Tour at 6 p.m. Saturday; and the Haunted Genoa Ghost Walk at 10:30 a.m. next Sunday.

All Haunted Weekend events are $5. For tickets and more details: (775) 782-2555; www.historicnevada.org (click on "Calendar/Events").
