MATCHUP TO WATCH
49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers vs. Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz
Cruz ranks fourth in the NFL with 37 receptions, and he's tied for the league lead with five touchdown catches. Furthermore, he dominated Rogers in the first half of the NFC Championship Game in January, catching eight passes for 125 yards. Rogers couldn't match Cruz's quickness, although he tightened the coverage in the second half and kept Cruz out of the end zone. Quarterback Eli Manning trusts Cruz to the point that he'll throw passes well before the receiver is open. The 49ers took advantage of that in last year's regular-season matchup and hope to capitalize on it today.
THREE KEYS TO GAME
Manning isn't fast or athletic, but he extends plays by making subtle movements in the pocket. The 49ers can't merely hope to rattle him, as they did their last two quarterback opponents. They have to get him on the ground.
The Giants' secondary is banged up, and the 49ers' receivers, especially Vernon Davis and Mario Manningham, should be able to test the group deep. New York's pass defense is tied for 22nd in the league.
The 49ers' special teams rank 30th and 31st, respectively, in defending kick and punt returns. The unit has plenty of individual talent but has not found the team dynamic that made it one of the best groups in the NFL last season.
