Amid a sharp decline in net income, University of Phoenix operator Apollo Group Inc. plans to close 115 of its Phoenix sites, including the learning center in Elk Grove.

Apollo spokesman Mark Brenner said today that the Elk Grove learning center at 9280 W. Stockton Blvd., will be phased out in a process that could take months.

Brenner said there are currently 228 students enrolled at the Elk Grove center. He said they will be given the option to continue at the center or continue their education program online.

The students also could opt for other alternatives, but Brenner said the Elk Grove center will continue to function until all 228 students exercise their options.

The Elk Grove center is no longer taking applications.

The planned nationwide closing affect about 13,000 students in 30 states. Phoenix said it will close 25 main campuses and 90 smaller learning centers.
