'Best Food Writing 2012' has story by Bee's Macias

The Bee's Chris Macias has been included in the just-released collection "Best Food Writing 2012," edited by Holly Hughes.

The April 18 story by Macias is about Edward Martinez, now an accomplished pastry chef whose early life seemed destined to be short and violent as a member of a notorious street gang.

The story recounts how delving into the world of making pastries may have saved Martinez's life, or at least spared him a stretch in the state penitentiary.

Martinez went to culinary school and went on to work as pastry chef at Hawks in Granite Bay and recently joined Enotria as pastry chef.

Also included in "Best Food Writing 2012" are stories from the New York Times, Saveur, Gastronomica, and Food & Wine.

Also representing the Sacramento area is Hank Shaw, whose "On Killing," leads the collection. Shaw, whose first book, "Hunt, Gather, Cook," has been a big success, discusses the idea of killing animals to eat.

"Best Food Writing 2012" went on sale Tuesday at bookstores or online.
