The city of Elk Grove is looking for community volunteers to help refurbish the city's first transitional house for homeless people.

The Day of Caring event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the day.

In July, the city bought a home in the Old Town area for transitional housing. The five-bedroom property will give homeless people a temporary place to stay while they connect with resources and find permanent housing.

This the first major project by Homeless Solutions Committee, an informal working group that represents several Elk Grove faith-based and civic organizations. Sacramento Self-Help Housing will operate the home when it opens in early 2013.

For more information about the event, the location or to volunteer, contact the city's housing program manager, Sarah Bontrager, at (916) 627-3209 or sbontrager@elkgrovecity.org.
