Two people were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of forgery or counterfeiting of government identification cards and conspiracy, after a four-month investigation by the California Department of Justice.
Laurel Velasquez, 30, and Pedro Izehuatl, 45, both of Sacramento, were arrested for allegedly selling counterfeit driver's licenses, green cards and a Social Security card for $100 each to undercover California Department of Justice special agents. Velasquez and Izehuatl operated a counterfeit identification ring that sold federal immigration documents, California identification cards and driver's licenses, Social Security cards and passports, according to a DOJ news release.
In July, the California Department of Justice received information about a potential counterfeit identification ring and started an investigation. The California Department of Justice also worked with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. After the four-month investigation, DOJ agents searched the home of Velasquez on Wednesday and seized equipment used to create counterfeit identity documents, the release said.
Velasquez and Izehuatl were booked into Sacramento County jail. They are scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Sacramento County Superior Court.
