A plan to open levees along the Sacramento River to public access will be the focus of a town hall meeting Monday in Sacramento.
The city of Sacramento is preparing to carry out a 1997 plan, already approved by the City Council, to create a public walking and biking path along the Sacramento River as far south as Freeport.
Public access to parts of the levee is blocked by numerous private fences across the levee in the Pocket and Little Pocket neighborhoods. The property owners along the river retained the right to exclusive access to the levee when the area was subdivided.
The city plan calls for purchasing public access easements from the property owners and building a paved trail along the levee.
The public is invited to learn about the plan between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at John F. Kennedy Auditorium, 6715 Gloria Drive, in Sacramento.
