UCD cross country team places second

The UC Davis women's cross country team placed three runners in the top five and finished second in the Big West Conference Championships in Riverside on Saturday, UCD reported.

Sarah Sumpter was second, Alycia Cridebring third and Katie Fry fifth for the Aggies.

The UCD men finished fourth, led by Trevor Halsted's sixth-place finish.

• The Sacramento State men finished fifth and the women eighth in the Big Sky Conference Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz., Sac State reported. The Hornets' top finishers were Mark Frazier in 21st and Justine Rea in 28th.

Sac State volleyball team stuns Northern Arizona

The host Sac State women's volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to upset Northern Arizona, Sac State reported.

The Hornets won 20-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-12.

The Lumberjacks (18-4, 10-3 Big Sky) had a seven-match winning streak halted.

Kayla Beal (a career-high 22 kills), Janelle Currey (a season-best 21) and Jessie Genger (18 kills) led Sac State (9-15, 5-9).

• Devon Damelio had 11 kills to help UC Davis sweep host UC Riverside in a Big West match, UCD reported.

The Aggies won 25-13, 25-15, 25-16. They evened their overall record at 12-12 and improved to 6-5 in conference play. The Highlanders are 5-19 and 0-11.

Silveira's late goal lifts Hornets over Cal Poly

Gabe Silveira scored the tiebreaking goal in the 88th minute as the Sac State men's soccer team reclaimed the Big West lead by beating host Cal Poly 3-2, Sac State reported.

The Hornets (8-6-2, 5-2-1) have 16 points, followed by UC Davis with 15 and Cal Poly (9-6-1, 4-3-1) with 13.

American River prevails vs. Modesto in shootout

• Backup quarterback Mike Hicks passed for 233 yards and hit Diondre Batson for a 59-yard touchdown as host American River College outlasted Modesto 56-49 in a Valley Conference game.

Batson also caught a 38-yard scoring pass on a halfback option from Devonte Booker, who had a four-yard scoring run. Hicks had scoring runs of five and seven yards.

• Myles McKee threw three touchdown passes, two to Frankie Gomes, as host Sierra College held off College of the Sequoias 23-22 in a Valley Conference game, Sierra reported.
