Sacramento-area employers continue to post jobs at a healthy clip with strong demand showing in health care, information technology and retail.
All but four cities in the four-county Sacramento region posted more ads in September than August, led by Sacramento with more than 19,000 ads posted online, according to the state Employment Development Department's latest Help Wanted Online report. Employers in Roseville posted 2,340 ads, good for second place. Rancho Cordova, with 1,735 posts, was third.
Carmichael, Davis, West Sacramento and Woodland saw slight declines from August.
Nine of the area's top 10 occupations including those in computer systems and support, customer service, retail and health services saw gains over August, according to the EDD.
Only registered nurses saw a drop in postings, but the position still led all occupations in September with more than 1,500 ads.
Meanwhile, posts by Sutter Health, Dignity Health and Kaiser Permanente perennially top employers in the EDD report were all but unchanged in September compared to August, with nearly 1,700 posts combined.
All told, the online posts are inching closer to 30,000 online job listings, sustaining the momentum of the past several months.
During the summer, analysts at the EDD were encouraged when Sacramento-area online posting cracked the 27,000 barrier in June and July the highest level in four years.
September's Sacramento jobs report offered more good news as unemployment dipped below 10 percent for the first time since January 2009.
The region's 9.7 percent jobless rate was down from 10.3 percent in August and nearly two points lower than the same time a year ago, when Sacramento-area unemployment stood at 11.5 percent.
Retailers need seasonal help
Retailers are expecting sales to grow this holiday season and are hiring to meet seasonal demand, according to the National Retail Federation's recently released holiday forecast.
The Washington, D.C.-based trade group is projecting a 4.1 percent sales increase during the holidays. Officials say it's the group's brightest outlook since the recession.
The NRF said retailers expect to hire as many as 625,000 seasonal workers.
Retailers hired about 607,500 seasonal workers nationwide in 2011, according to the federation.
Who are they seeking?
According to job search engine Indeed.com, sales associates sit atop the list of seasonal and part-time employees, while merchandise associates, store team members, clerks and cashiers also made the top 10.
Local retailers are also gearing up for the season.
Online ads for retail sales staff, retail managers and supervisors and customer service representatives in the Sacramento area all increased in September from August, according to the EDD.
"The retail industry creates hundreds of thousands of jobs every holiday season," said NRF President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Shay, in a statement announcing the forecast.
"For some, seasonal employment can turn into a career opportunity once the holidays have passed."
