Accomplishment: Received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Details: Baird received his certificate in Washington, D.C., in June. It is the highest honor the U.S. government can bestow on a K-12 science teacher, according to a San Juan Unified School district e-newsletter story.

Kudos to: Sun Gro Horticulture

Accomplishment: The company donated 44,000 pounds of potting soil to Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services

Details: The soil will be used in the food bank's demonstration garden, a place to learn how to grow and harvest vegetables, herbs and fruit. Some of the donated soil will also be given to food bank clients, a Sun Gro press release said.

Kudos to: Frank Mitloehner, professor and air quality specialist at the University of California, Davis

Accomplishment: Selected to chair a United Nations committee to measure the environmental impacts of the livestock industry

Details: The effort is meant to improve sustainability of the livestock sector as world-wide consumption of meat, dairy and eggs increases. Methods of raising livestock differ. Mitloehner notes that it takes 20 Indian cows to produce as much milk as one dairy cow in the United States.
