Leading Off: Cheaters Cabrera, Colon have last laugh

Remember, kids, cheaters never prosper.

Try telling that to Bartolo Colon and Melky Cabrera, and take one step back so you don't get hit by any flying tobacco juice as they laugh in your face.

Colon, the portly A's pitcher, and Cabrera, the All-Star Game MVP and one-time Giants fan favorite, will cash in next season – and sooner than that for Melky – despite each getting suspended for 50 games after testing positive for testosterone.

Incredibly, the A's re-signed Colon to a one-year deal worth $3 million – add on another $1.2 million if he starts. That's a $2 million raise for a 39-year-old who had to cheat his way to a 10-9 record in 2012.

Why re-sign Colon? The A's certainly didn't miss him while they charged toward the American League West title, riding the arms of a young pitching staff that got its chance only after Colon's departure.

Colon's hefty payday is only good news for Cabrera, who at age 28 figures to make a lot more than an overweight, aging pitcher. He now has a case to convince a team he's worth $8 million to $11 million for a year – much larger than he could have imagined after getting pinched.

But before he signs a free-agent contract, Cabrera reportedly will be given 100 percent of his postseason share from the Giants despite being told to stay away from the team after he was eligible to return.

Cabrera can thank a rule in the players' union for his unwarranted full share.

While it's not yet known how much each Giant will collect, members of last year's World Series champion, the St. Louis Cardinals, received $323,000 each.

It'll certainly be enough for Cabrera to laugh all the way to the bank.
