Chilly weather is on the way.
A cold storm system from the Gulf of Alaska is predicted to swoop into California, bringing a high of just 61 degrees on Thursday and 56 degrees on Friday in Sacramento. That's in contrast to Tuesday's high of 81 degrees downtown.
A 20-degree dip in temperatures may also bring the first snowfall to the foothills. Up to three inches of snow could accumulate at about the 2,500-feet elevation level, according to the National Weather Service.
A total of six inches could fall at the 5,000-feet level and up to 10 inches along the crest of the Sierra Nevada.
In the valley, rainfall is expected to be light -- from .10 to a quarter of an inch.
The NWS forecast:
Today: Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 74. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon.
Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 50. South wind 9 to 11 mph.
Thursday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Thursday night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Friday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. Southeast wind around 6 mph becoming southwest in the morning.
Friday night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57.
Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 39.
Veterans Day: Sunny, with a high near 60.
Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 42.
Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.
Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 47.
Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 65.
