Some residents of Sacramento's Pocket area have been distressed to see city crews removing trees from the landscaped median on Pocket Road during the past week.
Linda Tucker, spokeswoman for the city's Public Works Department, said 112 pear trees infested with mistletoe are being removed after an ongoing effort to eradicate the mistletoe failed.
The trees will be replaced with 60 Emerald Sunshine elm trees that will provide a large canopy, she said.
The project, between Greenhaven Drive and Silva Ranch Way, began Oct. 21 and is to be completed by Thanksgiving.
Traffic on Pocket Road will be affected due to the closure of lanes next to the median on each side during the tree removal and replanting.
