The real steal: Enjoy $6 small plates, wines by the glass and cocktails during happy hour at the original Buckhorn restaurant.
Select domestic beers are $3 and imported beers are $4.
Small plates include the classic French mussels and (two) tri-tip sliders.
The vibe: The original Buckhorn restaurant sits in a building that is more than 120 years old. The walls are red brick. Mounted on those walls are animal heads including deer, moose, caribou and boar. White string lights add a warm glow to the rustic feel.
There also is a back room past the bar that can seat parties of up to 35 guests. If your party is even larger, the private dining room, tucked away beyond the back room, accommodates up to 75 guests. There also is patio seating.
Signature drink: Two signature cocktails are available during happy hour. The pomtini is made with pomegranate liqueur, Grey Goose vodka and fresh lime juice.
The "original margarita" is made with fresh lime juice and simple syrup for a housemade sweet-and-sour. All cocktails are made with fresh-squeezed juice and are $6 each.
Something extra: The "Buckhorn red" is the house favorite sangria. Offered always for $7 a glass or $25 a pitcher, this drink is made with red wine and fresh fruit such as oranges, raspberries and lemons.
The red wine is produced especially for Buckhorn by Turkovich Family Wines of Winters.
The Buckhorn also has an in-house butcher who cuts every certified Angus beef steak at this steakhouse.
This historic building was originally a hotel the De Vilbiss Hotel constructed in 1889 by John De Vilbiss. The building withstood a 1892 earthquake that leveled much of Winters.
