Rain, near-freezing temperatures in Sacramento area weather forecast

Thunderstorms are a possibility today -- and temperatures around freezing could occur this weekend.

An umbrella could come in handy today in Sacramento where a cold front has dropped temperatures. The National Weather Service expects a replay of Thursday when .08 of an inch fell in downtown Sacramento.

After the weak storm front moves through, clear, cold conditions will reign. The weather service advises Sacramento region residents to protect plants, pets and pipes against near-freezing temperatures early Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The NWS forecast for the Sacramento region:

Today: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. North northeast wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. East wind 5 to 7 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers before 10am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 56. North northeast wind around 5 mph becoming northwest in the morning. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Patchy frost after 1 a.m. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low around 35. North wind 5 to 8 mph.

Veterans Day: Patchy frost before 7 a.m. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 58. North northwest wind 3 to 8 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 62.

Monday Night: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Tuesday: A chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 61.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 61.

Wednesday Night: A slight chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 62.
