STILLWATER, Okla. Markel Brown and Le'Bryan Nash scored 16 points each as Oklahoma State held off UC Davis 73-65 Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Phil Forte hit three big shots in the second half and finished with 13 points for the Cowboys, who shot 40.4 percent from the field. Jean-Paul Olukemi added 10 points for OSU. Freshman Markus Smart had eight points and seven assists.
Corey Hawkins scored 13 points, Ryan Howley 11 and Josh Ritchart (Forest Lake Christian) 10 for the Aggies. Howley had 13 rebounds as UC Davis outrebounded the Cowboys 43-29.
The Aggies opened the second half with a 19-11 run and led 51-48 with 12:20 remaining.
Sacramento State 96, UC Merced 62 at the Nest John Dickson scored 18 points and Konner Veteto (Placer High) 17 as the Hornets opened their season with a victory over the NAIA Bobcats.
The Hornets shot almost as well from the field (54.4 percent) and three-point range (46.7 percent) as they did from the free-throw line (61.4 percent), where they hit 27 of 44 shots.
Pepperdine 83, UC Davis 68 at the Pavilion Sydnee Fipps scored a career-high 19 points, hitting 9 of 10 from the free-throw line, and freshman Molly Greubel scored 16 points in her collegiate debut, but the Aggies fell to the Waves in the season opener for both teams, UCD reported. Fipps shot 5 of 7 from the field and grabbed four rebounds as UC Davis lost its season opener for the first time since 2006.
Long Beach State 74, Sac State 71 in Long Beach Alle Moreno led the Hornets with 15 points in a season opener.
