MATCHUP TO WATCH
49ers left tackle Joe Staley vs. Rams defensive end Robert Quinn
The good news for Staley: He doesn't have to face nemesis James Hall, who is no longer with the Rams. The bad news is that Hall has been replaced at right defensive end by Quinn, St. Louis' top draft pick last year who leads the team with seven sacks. The 49ers considered Quinn, who is smaller but quicker than Hall, during the 2011 draft but went with Aldon Smith instead. The Rams took Quinn 11th overall. On the other side of the line, right tackle Anthony Davis will be matched against Chris Long.
THREE KEYS TO GAME
The 49ers play best when they have a lead and can pound defenses with their running game. The 49ers, however, haven't scored on their opening possession since Week 2.
There's a good chance Rams receiver Danny Amendola will be back in the lineup after missing the last three games. Amendola is small and quick and is comparable to the Giants' Victor Cruz, a difficult matchup for the 49ers the past two seasons.
Alex Smith played very well last week against Arizona, but he was sacked four times and has been sacked 22 times this season. He needs to do a better job of throwing the ball away.
