BERKELEY – Allen Crabbe had 27 points, and Justin Cobbs scored 22 as Cal opened its season by beating Cal State Bakersfield 78-65 Sunday night.
The Bears led comfortably against the smaller, slower Roadrunners (0-2) after going on a 21-3 run midway through the first half.
Crabbe, Cal's leading scorer last season, had 20 points before halftime, then gave the crowd a brief scare when he injured his left ankle with 1:27 left while positioning for a rebound. He returned for the second half.
Richard Solomon, limited to 13 games last season because of academic ineligibility, had eight points and nine rebounds for the Bears.
No. 9 Syracuse 62, No. 20 San Diego State 49 in San Diego – Playing on the flight deck of the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Midway, the Orange adjusted better to the windy conditions and beat the Aztecs in the season opener for both teams.
"This was a tough day," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "You had to get to the basket. That was the only way you were going to score."
C.J. Fair and Michael Carter-Williams had 17 points each for Syracuse, which made 25 of 56 shots.
San Diego State made only 17 of 63 shots against the taller Orange's 2-3 zone. Syracuse had 10 blocks.
No. 2 Louisville 79, Man- hattan 51 in Louisville, Ky. – Russ Smith scored 23 points to help the Cardinals defeat the Jaspers in the season opener for both teams.
No. 4 Ohio State 82, Albany 60 in Columbus, Ohio – Deshaun Thomas scored 13 of his 19 points in a 17-2 run to end the half, sparking the Buckeyes (1-0) over the Great Danes (1-1).
No. 12 Arizona 82, Charleston Southern 73 in Tucson, Ariz. – Mark Lyons had 15 of his 17 points in the second half as the Wildcats (1-0) held off the Buccaneers (0-2).
Women
No. 4 Stanford 92, Santa Clara 57 in Santa Clara – Chiney Ogwumike had 22 points as the Cardinal (2-0) warmed up for its showdown with Baylor by beating the Broncos (1-1).
Stanford meets the defending national champions Friday at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu. The Bears beat the Cardinal in last season's national semifinals.
Cal State Fullerton 94, Sacramento State 75 in Fullerton – After seeing their lead shrink to nine with just over five minutes to play, the Titans (1-1) went on a 12-1 run to seal the victory over the Hornets (0-2), according to the Sac State athletics website.
Reserves Se'nyce Parrish and Sadie Clements led Sac State with 15 points each.
