This, that and the other thing
After Phil "I Won't Travel" Jackson made it obvious he didn't want the job for a third time, the Los Angeles Lakers hired Mike D'Antoni as their coach.
But wouldn't it have been better to make Kobe Bryant player-coach? Who knows the team better than Bryant? Besides, his résumé that includes five NBA titles is much more impressive than D'Antoni's with zero titles and a losing postseason record.
Too big of an ego, you say? Bryant's status as one of the best ever to play the game already is etched in stone. What he desires more than anything is to win more NBA titles than Michael Jordan, who has six.
It could be another big day for Bay Area baseball when the American and National leagues announce their managers of the year today.
The A's Bob Melvin and Giants' Bruce Bochy are among the finalists. Melvin deserves the nod after leading the A's to an improbable American League West title. While the Giants won the N.L. West, it really wasn't until the postseason that Bochy's skills as a manager outshined them all.
Monday night's showdown between the 49ers and Bears could be a battle of backup quarterbacks.
Both starters, Alex Smith and Jay Cutler, suffered concussions Sunday, and their status won't clear up until their noggins do.
