Four Sacramento State players scored in double figures, led by sophomores Mikh McKinney (23) and Dylan Garrity (21), as the host Hornets cruised to an 85-67 win over Cal State Bakersfield in a nonconference game Wednesday night, Sac State reported.
The Hornets (2-0) shot 49 percent from the field, 80.6 percent from the free-throw line and committed just 10 turnovers while getting nine steals.
Sac State, which shot 30 more free throws than the Roadrunners (0-3), led 34-28 at halftime.
The Hornets took control midway through the second half, using a 16-2 run spanning six minutes to lead 71-51 with 4:23 remaining.
Sac State made 14 of 16 free throws during the final 2:32 to ice the victory.
Garrity's 21 points were a career high. He had seven assists.
John Dickson (15 points, six rebounds) and Jackson Carbajal (10 points, four rebounds) also scored in double figures for the Hornets.
Bakersfield's Javante Maynor had 23 points. Adam Young and Stephon Carter scored 12 points apiece for the Roadrunners.
Sac State plays at Utah on Friday night and will attempt to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 1999.
No. 10 Florida 74, No. 22 Wisconsin 56 in Gainesville, Fla. Erik Murphy made all 10 of his shots, including two three-pointers, and scored 24 points to lead the Gators (2-0) over the Badgers (1-1).
No. 15 Creighton 77, Alabama-Birmingham 60 in Omaha, Neb. Josh Jones scored all 18 of his points in the second half to lead the Bluejays (2-0) over the Blazers (1-1).
UCLA The school filed a formal appeal with the NCAA regarding freshman Shabazz Muhammad being ruled ineligible for violating amateurism rules.
Coach Ben Howland said the case is expected to be heard by an NCAA appeals committee Friday and the school hopes to have a resolution shortly thereafter.
Women
USF 72, UC Davis 65 in San Francisco UCD's Sydnee Fipps scored 26 points and had five steals, but the Dons (2-0) topped the Aggies (0-2), UCD reported.
No. 9 Penn State 63, No. 16 Texas A&M 58 in College Station, Texas Alex Bentley scored 21 points to help the Nittany Lions (2-0) beat the Aggies (0-2).
