Mother Nature has been kind to high school football teams this fall, other than a few showers in recent weeks.
With two storms headed our way, that likely will change for Sac-Joaquin Section football playoff games tonight and Saturday.
While fans prefer it dry, most players don't care. And many prefer to play on grass, which rain can quickly turn into a muddy mess.
But who still has real grass these days?
Every Division I, II and III second-round game, except Inderkum-Sierra in Manteca, will be played on artificial turf, the fake stuff used to avoid mud and reduce maintenance.
On the other hand, every Division IV, V and VI game, except Highlands at Waterford in the southern part of the section, will be played on grass. The smaller schools have remained loyal to the real stuff.
One player relieved to be on turf is Elk Grove defensive lineman Bwon Canada. The junior, allergic to grass, had to leave a nonleague game at Del Campo in September after breaking out in hives.
Tonight, the teams meet again, on turf in Elk Grove. Canada will be the one grinning in jersey No. 14.
