REPORT CARD

• Offense: Who says the 49ers' offense can't go downfield? Colin Kaepernick has throws of 57, 32, 22 and 20 in the first half, and Frank Gore finishes with 78 rushing yards. A complete game. Grade: A

• Defense: If it weren't for Kaepernick, Aldon Smith would be the story of the game. He has 5 1/2 sacks, torments Jason Campbell all night and takes the NFL sack lead with 15. Grade: A

• Special teams: David Akers breaks out of his slump by going 3 of 3 on field-goal attempts. Ted Ginn doesn't have any huge returns, but neither does Devin Hester. Grade: B+

• Overall: The lesson after this one: Don't play the 49ers after a loss … or a tie. The 49ers come out focused and on fire in all three phases and wrestle the No. 2 seed in the NFC from Chicago. Grade: A
