Night life: Purgatory offers contrasting vibes

Purgatory Restaurant and Nightclub

1616 J St., Sacramento

(916) 800-2582

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday

Happy hour: 4:30 -7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday

The real steal: Food and drinks are $1 off during happy hour. Well drinks range $4 to $5, domestic beers are $4 and microbrews are $5.

Purgatory also offers a nightly special that begins during happy hour and lasts all evening. Usually, the nightly special is a twisted well drink – a drink made with more than one liquor – for $1 or $2 off.

Appetizers range from $2.95 to $6.95, with options such as nachos, garlic fries and onion rings.

The vibe: The provocatively named Purgatory, which features a "nice" upstairs restaurant and "naughty" downstairs nightclub, starts with a serene indoor patio with its own bar.

Plants surround you on the indoor patio, which has an outdoor feel but offers shelter on a rainy day. A fountain in the back corner adds to the garden feel.

Inside is the dining area, with two giant bars, white-linen table cloths and white couches. Crystal hanging lamps dangle above you, and the couches are elevated slightly above the bar and the tables, giving a whole new view of the place. Two sides of the room have light-blue walls, adding pop to the white couches and enhancing the celestial vibe.

Downstairs, and off the indoor patio, is a completely different room. It's a "naughty" nightclub, furnished in reds and blacks, that stands in contrast to the "nice" restaurant. Chandeliers, black leather couches and a stripper pole complete the scene.

Signature drink: A popular cocktail is the Cactus Ball, a normally $8 drink that some nights is reduced to $7 as the nightly special. This drink is made with amaretto, Captain Morgan Bacardi 151, pineapple juice, grenadine and lime juice for a sweet cocktail with a punch of liquor. The drink was inspired by a mai tai, and its alcohol flavor is masked.
