Kudos to: Catriona McPherson, Yolo County novelist

Accomplishment: Received a McCavity Award, voted on by members of Mystery Readers International

Details: McPherson received the Sue Feder Historical Mystery Award for her book "Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains."

Kudos to: Sacramento's Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects, working with Oakland-based Clark Construction

Accomplishment: Won two national honors from the Design-Build Institute of America: Best Overall Project and Best Office Building

Details: The project that earned the awards is the California ISO headquarters in Folsom. The complex houses the people who manage the state's high-voltage grid. The facility has space for 700 employees, public meeting places and numerous sustainability features.

Kudos to: Donovan Serrano, Rio Linda High School drum major

Accomplishment: First place in the Open Drum Major competition at the Del Oro Band Review

Details: In addition to Serrano's accomplishment, the Rio Linda marching band took third place. The band will perform Saturday in the Santa Parade in downtown Sacramento.
