Area teams fare well in hoops showcase

While Pleasant Grove and Antelope were victorious, Sacramento High lost in double overtime in Saturday's Nor Cal Tip-Off Classic boys basketball showcase at Newark Memorial High School.

In the nightcap of the seven-game event, Kendall Smith, a 6-foot-1 guard, scored 48 points in leading Deer Valley of Antioch to a 97-96 win over Sacramento.

Kentucky-bound Marcus Lee, a 6-10 post, added 22 points, 25 rebounds and eight assists for Deer Valley.

De'Von Boyd led the Dragons with 31 points. Aaron Cameron scored 28, and James Hadnot had 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The score was 78-78 after regulation, and the teams scored 13 points each in the first overtime.

Malik Thames led Pleasant Grove past St. Patrick's-St. Vincent of Vallejo 74-63. Thames had 23 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Gabe Bealer of Antelope scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 57-40 win over McClymonds of Oakland.

Jack Scott, Cartwright tip off boys tourneys

The first big weekend of boys basketball includes several area tournaments, including the 38th annual Jack Scott Tournament at Rio Americano, the 34th annual Bill Cartwright Classic at Elk Grove, the Bronco Roundup at Bella Vista and the Gold Dust Tournament at El Dorado and Ponderosa.

All tournaments start tonight and continue through Saturday.

Here are today's opening-round games:

• Jack Scott: Monterey Trail vs. Oak Ridge, 3:30 p.m.; Foothill vs. El Camino, 5 p.m.; Center vs. Rio Americano, 6:45 p.m.; Jesuit vs. Kennedy, 8 p.m.

• Bill Cartwright: McClatchy vs. Lodi, 3:30 p.m.; Folsom vs. Nevada Union, 5 p.m.; Florin vs. Elk Grove, 6:30 p.m.; Fairfield vs. Lincoln-Stockton, 8 p.m.

• Bronco Roundup: Davis vs. Yuba City, 4 p.m., Chico vs. Granite Bay, 5:30 p.m.; Bella Vista vs. Rosemont, 7 p.m.; Franklin vs. Oakmont, 8:30 p.m.

• Gold Dust: Ponderosa vs. Amador Valley, 7 p.m. (at Ponderosa); El Dorado vs. Colfax, 7 p.m., and Capital Christian vs. South Tahoe, 8:30 p.m. (at El Dorado).

State powers highlight two girls tourneys

State power St. Mary's of Stockton will participate in the Holiday Classic girls basketball tournament at Christian Brothers, and defending state Division V champion Brookside Christian of Stockton leads the field for the Bill Cartwright Classic at Elk Grove. Both tournaments run today through Saturday.

Today's pairings:

• Holiday Classic: Christian Brothers vs. Ponderosa, 3:30 p.m.; Sheldon vs. River City, 5 p.m.; St. Mary's-Stockton vs. Nevada Union, 6:30 p.m.; Kennedy vs. Del Campo, 8 p.m.

• Bill Cartwright Classic: Florin vs. Inderkum, 3:30 p.m.; Rocklin vs. Elk Grove, 5 p.m.; Napa vs. Franklin, 6:30 p.m.; Brookside Christian-Stockton vs. Beyer-Modesto, 8 p.m.
