'The Year of Magical Thinking'
What: This weekend is your last chance to catch Janis Stevens in the one-woman show "The Year of Magical Thinking. The play is based on author Joan Didion's best-selling memoir recalling the deaths of her husband-writer, John Gregory Dunne, and their daughter, Quintana Dunne Michael.

Go Tell It on the Mountain
What: The Blind Boys of Alabama bring their Christmas show to Grass Valley. The legendary gospel group promises to sing Christmas favorites along with their own material. The group, originally started in 1939, has been honored with lifetime achievement awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Grammys.

'Procession of Carols'
What: All three Sacramento State choirs, led by Donald Kendrick, will perform in the popular "Procession of Carols." Candlelit processions, traditional carols, narrations and organ music are all part of the program that regularly sells out. This year's program includes the Austrian carol "Still, Still, Still" and fresh takes on "Jingle Bells" and "The Snow Lay on the Ground."

Christkindlmarkt
What: In many German and Austrian towns, Advent marks the opening of the town's Christkindlmarkt (Christ child market). Folks celebrate the Christmas season with food, drink and shopping. In that German tradition, the Sacramento Turn Verein will hold its annual Christkindlmarkt for holiday shopping and entertainment. Look for the Lebkuchen (a type of gingerbread) and Glühwein (hot mulled wine). An American Santa and a German Christkind will also make appearances on both days.
When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday

Cost: Admission is free for the entire family with the donation of a child's coat; $3 per person otherwise.

Capitol tree lighting
What: Gov. Jerry Brown will illuminate about 10,000 LED lights on the Capitol's 50-foot white fir tree from the Latour Demonstration State Forest in Shasta County. The tree, the first to be from a state forest, will also be decorated with hundreds of ornaments hand made by children and adults with developmental disabilities. Entertainment will be provided by the Governor's Own, 59th Army Band, California National Guard, Galena Street East and St. Paul's Baptist Church choir. All attendees are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to be donated to California Emergency Foodlink.
When: 4:30 p.m., formal program starts at 5 p.m.
