Accomplishment: Initiated and maintains the school vegetable garden at Leataata Floyd Elementary School in Sacramento.
Details: Shapiro uses the garden to teach children how to grow and harvest healthy vegetables. Vegetables are shared with students in the classroom, school families and a food locker.
Kudos to: Mariani Nut Company Foundation, an endeavor of the walnut and almond processing company in Winters, Yolo County
Accomplishment: Named Philanthropist of the Year by the Yolo Community Foundation
Details: The Mariani family's foundation through the years has given without fanfare to groups such as the 4-H Club and the Future Farmers of America, chipped in for band instruments, improved school computers, helped the library and supported town festivals.

Accomplishment: Winners of the American history essay contest sponsored by Roseville's Gold Trail Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Details: The topic the winners wrote about was "Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence." The focus was on ethnic minorities who provided military, patriotic and public service in support of the American Revolution.
