• Offense: Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers made a decisive blunder when the game seemed to be in hand. Everything about the errant pitch was bad – from the play call, to the toss to Ted Ginn's inability to keep it out of the Rams' hands. Grade: D

• Defense: The Rams scored only one touchdown, and it came off a miscue by the 49ers' offense. The defense allowed a critical two-point conversion and had no takeaways. Grade: B+

• Special teams: For the second time this year, David Akers missed a potential winning field goal in overtime against the Rams. Andy Lee punted well, and the coverage units were solid. The 49ers, however, don't have any memorable returns. Grade: D

• Overall: Super bowl-worthy teams somehow eke out victories in tense, close games like Sunday's. Instead of making big plays at the most critical times, the 49ers committed big errors. Grade: D
