A newborn baby boy whose body was found discarded in a trash bag along a Newcastle roadway June 21 has been laid to rest in the New Auburn Cemetery.
"Although the mother of the baby has not been found, investigators wanted to give the baby a decent burial," Placer County Sheriff Edward Bonner said in a news release.
In a driving rainstorm and gusting winds on Wednesday, law-enforcement chaplains and other members of the Sheriff's Department held a burial service at the cemetery, holding umbrellas over the tiny casket.
The body was discovered in a pile of garbage bags several feet off the road in an undeveloped subdivision near Green Hills Court.
Anyone with information that could lead investigators to the baby's mother is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at (530) 889-7800.
Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Placer County Crime Stoppers at (800) 923-8191, where a cash reward of up to $1,000 is available if the information leads to an arrest.
