Re "Distortions hide the positive side of Wal-Mart" (Forum, Dec. 9) and "Shopping local is better community investment" (Viewpoints, Nov. 27): Former Folsom city manager Martha Clark Lofgren points out many positives about Wal-Mart, particular in her Folsom experience.
I also agree with Bruce Maiman about shopping "local wherever I can." My particular reason is that I want to continue to see employees, particularly grocery store employees, continue to have good jobs and fair salaries.
I happen to shop at Bel Air -- and have for more than 35 years -- and will continue to do so. Bel Air is not perfect (some long-time employees still can't get full-time hours but many receive benefits), but many employees enjoy a full-time schedule and benefits.
I don't want to see one of the last bastions of middle-class jobs disappear to more big-box stores with their lower wages, hours and benefits.
