• Offense: LaMichael James gives the offense a spark and Frank Gore runs with power. But there are too many timeouts, too many penalties, the offense is too disjointed and the 49ers go 2 for 10 on third down. Grade: C+

• Defense: The 49ers allow one touchdown – and it comes on fourth and goal. Aldon Smith's two sacks bring him closer to Michael Strahan's season sack record. Grade: A-

• Special teams: C.J. Spillman's recovery of a muffed punt breaks the game open. Kicker David Akers is 2 for 2 after his OT miss last week. Grade: A-

• Overall: It's not pretty, but the 49ers take another step toward the playoffs and hold onto to the No. 2 seed for another week. The win also sets up what promises to be a well-hyped road game against the Patriots. Grade: B+
