Re "2-state solution is in Israel's best interest" (Editorials, Dec. 5): The Bee editorial shows a lack of understanding of the history of the region.
The United Nations offered a two-state solution in 1947 that the Jews accepted but was rejected by the surrounding Arab countries who launched a war to annihilate Israel.
If the problem is the settlements, as the editorial board contends, why have Palestinians been opposed to the existence of the state of Israel long before there were any settlements?
The PLO was established with the goal of the destruction of the state of Israel, long before there were any settlements.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who was a member of the PLO, is portrayed as a moderate but his rhetoric to his own people speaks otherwise. For example, maps in Palestinian schools refuse to show the state of Israel. The problem is not the settlements. Peace will only occur when the Arabs will truly recognize the Jewish state of Israel.
