Re "California oil companies may be warming up to a carbon tax" (Dan Morain, Dec. 9): I totally support a well designed, consumer-friendly, revenue-neutral, progressively-rising tax on the carbon content of fossil fuels, with all the revenue recycled right back into the economy via a tax cut, check in the mail or other constructive measures.
How else is the most powerful engine on the planet outside of nature -- the economy -- going to align itself with the goal of survival of our civilization?
As long as carbon pollution remains profitable, it will continue to grow until the last drop is burned, along with the planet. Expensive?? Just think about the cost of drowning the world's coastal cities, incinerating our forests, dessicating our crop lands, mowing down entire cities with tornados, starving entire countries and dealing with roving bands of (armed) climate refugees. I'm willing to cough up some dough in order to have a future for my kids.
