Time to change toys for boys, too

Re "Barbie changes stereotypes" (Letters, Dec. 6): The introduction of a Barbie construction set -- with its hot pink blocks and "unapologetically all girl" construction choices -- is more a response to an increase in male consumer power than it is part of a progressive movement to combat gender stereotypes.

Though it seems that toys for girls are getting a minor make-over to reflect the changing consumer culture, one can't help but wonder: why aren't boys' toys in need of a change? With a market overloaded with toy guns and action figures condoning -- sometimes even glorifying -- violence, where are the toys aimed at developing communication skills?

Although the introduction of Barbie construction sets can vaguely be seen as a positive step for the industry, the concept of girls playing with blocks and other toys associated with spatial development is not taboo. It seems, however, that the idea of marketing dolls to boys is unthinkable.
