  • The new and old Torah are carried under a Chuppa into the temple during the 50th anniversary on December 16, 2012 at Bet Haverim in Davis, Calif. Bet Haverim leaders will present one of the congregation's previous Torahs to Congregacion Adat Or Yisrael of Santa Maria, Calif. The four-year-old central California synagogue counts mainly Jews of Hispanic origin amongst its membership; some have re-discovered Jewish heritage in their family tree, while others have chosen to become Jews-by-choice. Torah is the Hebrew name for the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy).
