A Gulf of Alaska storm is edging closer to Northern California, carrying with it prolonged wet weather.
Today is expected to be mostly sunny in Sacramento. Wednesday morning is expected to be frosty in the valley so cover frost-sensitive plants and exposed pipes.
Then, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are likely to be rainy in the valley and snowy in the Sierra.
The oncoming storm is likely to coat Redding in white. The National Weather Service said there is a potential of several inches of snow in the city on Thursday.
The detailed, 7-day forecast for the Sacramento region:
Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. Northwest wind 5 to 11 mph.
Tonight: Areas of frost after 10pm. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low around 32. Light west northwest wind.
Wednesday: Areas of frost before 10am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 51. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon.
Wednesday night: A 30 percent chance of rain after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. South southeast wind 5 to 7 mph.
Thursday: Rain likely, mainly after 10am. Cloudy, with a high near 54. South southeast wind 7 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Thursday night: Rain. Low around 42. Chance of precipitation is 90%.
Friday: Rain. High near 51. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Friday night: Rain. Cloudy, with a low around 45.
Saturday: Rain. Cloudy, with a high near 53.
Saturday night: Rain. Cloudy, with a low around 45.
Sunday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Breezy.
Sunday night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42.
Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 49.
