The real steal: $3 well cocktails or house white or red wine. Bud Light and Pabst Blue Ribbon are $2 by the glass and $8 by the pitcher.

Appetizers range from $2.50 to $5.50. Some house favorites are hummus with flat bread, fried chicken wings with maple syrup, and pulled-pork sliders with cole slaw.

The vibe: KBAR has a very downtown, business feel. It draws professionals who drop in for an after-work cocktail and college students who come to watch a game on television.

Attached to Cafe Bernardo, the bar is decorated festively for the holidays, with silver ornament wreaths and snow flakes.

Colorful, artsy walls create an eclectic feel, and seating is plentiful, with booths, high tables and a large bar. There also is patio seating – and plenty of people-watching opportunities – on K Street.

Signature drink: $3 happy-hour well drinks are the most popular choice. Options include classics such as cranberry and vodka and rum and cola.

Alternative libations: The $6 Passionista, which is not discounted for happy hour, is one of the most popular cocktails at KBAR. It is made with vodka, passionfruit purée, blood- orange purée and simple syrup.

If you come with friends, you can order the KBAR Kaddy, which serves four shooters for $15. Select from flavors such as kiwi, passionfruit, blood orange, mai tai or lemon-lime.

Something extra: There are four Cafe Bernardo locations – this one, 28th and Capitol, 15th and R streets, and Third and D streets in Davis – each with its own bar. Cafe Bernardo's menu is the same at each location, but bar menus differ.

The deals: Black Angus offers a tiered happy hour for food and drinks, at $3.50, $4.50 and $5.50.

Select wines by the glass run $3.50 to $5.50. All bottled beers and 16-ounce draft beers are $3.50, as are well drinks, onion rings and three-cheese garlic bread. A Goldstrike margarita, a classic martini or loaded potato skins, crispy fried zucchini and original or Buffalo chicken tenders all cost $4.50. A dollar more buys chipotle Buffalo wings, a fire-grilled artichoke, steak quesadilla or shrimp cocktail.
