Re "Early treatment urged for mentally ill" (Our Region, Dec. 21): It is alarming that only one county in California (Nevada County) has fully implemented the provisions of "Laura's Law" (AB 1421). This provides a process for court-ordered evaluations and medications for dangerously mentally ill persons who are refusing needed evaluation or treatment. While not a panacea for the continued violence in our country, AB 1421 ought to be a critical piece of the puzzle in state and federal discussions that are beginning to happen.
California counties that avoid using existing solutions need to be held accountable for their inaction. Ask your county leaders why they are avoiding Laura's Law as "too expensive" or other excuses. What's the cost of saving even one life from a violent end?
