The Optimist All-Star Football Classic has been a who's who of talented players over the decades. If you were a good player, you played in this game.
When The Bee in 2000 published its Top 100 football players of all time from the region based on high school achievements 97 were Optimist All-Star alums.
More senior stars will take the field Saturday at Del Oro, bearing their school colors one final time to help raise funds for the Optimist Foundation for Handicapped Camping.
The list of NFL players who have been in an Optimist game includes Oakmont linebacker Dan Bunz (1972), McClatchy cornerback Steve Brown (1978), Delta quarterback Tony Eason (1978), Roseville quarterback Robbie Bosco (1981), Highlands tight end Scott Galbraith (1985), Cordova quarterback Troy Taylor (1986), McClatchy wide receiver Malcolm Seabron (1990), Jesuit quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan (1997) and Grant wide receiver Donte' Stallworth (1997).
Perhaps the best group of future NFL players was 1999, when the Optimist game featured Grant tailback Onterrio Smith, River City receiver Malcom Floyd, Rio Americano lineman Ryan Flanigan, Elk Grove linebacker Lance Briggs, Dixon defensive lineman Dave Ball and Laguna Creek lineman Isaiah Ross.
